Da'Ja'Nay Askew, Ph.D.

Da'Ja'Nay Askew, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Jackson State University and Co-founder of the Doctoral Student Writing Collective, creating spaces that support and connect scholars across the globe.

Here is how she is leading beautifully in this season:

“My defining moment in my career was when I started the Doctoral Student Writing Collective with my brother, Tim Herd. We created the space because we wanted community and support during the dissertation process, which is something we were not getting from our institutions.

Since the founding in 2024, we have gained global traction with over 200 institutions reached, 15 countries represented, and 3,000 scholars expressing interest worldwide.

My leadership in the Doctoral Student Writing Collective is my most influential role. I frequently connect with members, provide mentorship, and offer steadfast support. The Doctoral Student Writing Collective has helped me to network and connect with prestigious scholars globally. I have been given so many opportunities that I would not otherwise have if it were not for the Writing Collective.

In addition to my role in the writing collective and being an Assistant Professor, I have cultivated a brand, The Healed Scholar, where I share my journey in higher education while offering valuable insights and hidden curriculum to prospective graduate students.

Recently, I endured a very difficult season marked by challenges and issues with my physical and mental health. I've been more intentional by setting firm boundaries that protect my wellness and by being vulnerable and transparent in sharing my story.

I know that I am not the only one who has suffered from the perils of the higher education system. My voice provides a safe space and affirmation for those who are afraid to speak up and fear retaliation.

My brand aims to make people feel seen, heard, and valued.”
